Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever. Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.

Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints a cursed number. Everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint '33'. Tomorrow we depart on our final mission - Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again.

Gustave

Gustave grew up feeling suffocated by the Paintress’ constant presence over Lumière. As an engineer, he has dedicated his life to the city’s defence and agricultural systems, striving to protect and provide for his people. Now, as an Expeditioner, he devotes his final year of life to defeating the Paintress and reclaiming a future for Lumière’s children.

Maelle

Orphaned at age 3, Maelle has never felt at home in Lumière. She has difficulty connecting with and trusting others, but has come to appreciate her foster brother Gustave. At 16 years of age, Maelle is significantly younger than the other Expeditioners. Unlike them, she views the Expedition as her chance to explore the world beyond Lumière and finally forge her own destiny.

Lune

The daughter of prominent researchers, Lune has a deep thirst for knowledge and has sacrificed everything to complete her parents’ work. Her one goal is to unravel the mystery of the Paintress. Entrusted with charting a path for the Expedition, Lune feels keenly the weight of responsibility and the stakes involved. She cannot and will not allow the Expedition to fail.

Sciel

A farmer turned teacher, Sciel is warm and outgoing, enjoying life day by day. She is at ease with death, having long accepted the brutality of their world. But her teasing smile masks a dark and painful past. Though deeply committed to the Expedition, she is untroubled by the spectre of failure. They will do all in their power, and it will either be enough, or it won’t.

Monoco

Monoco is a Gestral, a group of friendly beings who enjoy the thrill of battle and view competition as a form of meditation. As one of the few Gestrals who speak the human language, Monoco has adopted a scholarly demeanour which belies a bloodthirsty spirit. Though Gestrals are untouched by the Paintress, the prospect of combat entices Monoco to join the Expedition.

Verso is an outsider of unknown origins who closely tracks the Expedition...

Children in Lumière love hearing stories about the mythical Esquie and his whimsical adventures. Legends say that Esquie is the most powerful being in the world, able to soar through the heavens and dive deep beneath the sea. Legends also say… he’s lazy. Born at the dawn of time, what secrets does Esquie keep?

Renoir is relentlessly driven and myopic in his quest to save his family. His grit masks deep pain, desperation, and fear of loss. His methods are his own. He knows that victory demands sacrifice. And he is fully prepared to pay the price.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a role-playing game featuring turn-based combat. While it has large areas which can be explored, it is not strictly an open-world game as it plays out across linear levels.

Unlike some turn-based games, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features real-time actions in battle, such as precision timing on strikes to increase damage, and also defensive moves like dodges and parries. 

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 begins on the island of Lumière. The residents of Lumière are watched by a gigantic being called the Paintress, and once a year this towering figure paints a number. Whoever is of the same age as the number perishes in a phenomenon called the Gommage.

Every year, the people of Lumière send an expedition to the mainland, to where the Paintress dwells, with the aim of killing her. She began her countdown at 100 and now, 67 years later, Expedition 33 sets out to achieve what no expedition before them has done.

Six characters can be recruited to the player's party, but only three can be used in battle at the same time. 

For the English-language voice-over... Charlie Cox (Daredevil) is the voice of Gustave, the lead engineer of Expedition 33. Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3) plays Maelle, a shy loner eager to escape the constraints of Lumière. Kirsty Rider (Sandman) voices Lune, the chief researcher of the Expedition; and Shala Nyx (The Old Guard) voices Sciel, a calm and cheerful warrior. 

Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI) plays Verso, a dangerous stranger tracking the Expedition’s every move. Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Black Panther) plays the role of Renoir, a man relentlessly driven to save his family. Find out more at the PlayStation Blog. 

For the French-language voice-over... Alexandre Gillet (Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) plays Gustave; Adeline Chetail (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild) is Maelle; Céline Melloul (One Piece) plays Lune; and Sarah Cornibert (Black Mirror) is Sciel. 

Elsewhere in the French cast, Féodor Atkine (The Witcher 3) plays Renoir and Slimane Yefsah (Assassin’s Creed Origins) voices Verso. Further voices are provided by Bruno Magne and Maxence Cazorla.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not available for PlayStation 4 consoles but can be purchased for and played on PlayStation 5 consoles. Find out more about PS5 here.

The reactive, turn-based combat of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will require time to master. The game's difficulty can be adjusted at any time however, with the three options being Story, Expeditioner and Expert.

The Story setting is the game's 'easy' mode, weakening enemies and making the window for dodges and parries more generous. Expeditioner is the game's 'normal' mode and offers a balanced challenge. Expert is 'hard' mode and requires precision inputs to dodge and parry the attacks of powerful enemies.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is enhanced for PlayStation 5 Pro, offering players visual settings including a higher-resolution quality mode and a 60 frames-per-second performance mode, as well as improved ray tracing. Find out more about PS5 Pro here.
